The Best Blue Ridge Parkway Drives from Asheville (and Which Car to Take)
The Blue Ridge Parkway runs right past Asheville, and you do not need a full week to see the best of it. Here is a route that fits in an afternoon, hits the highlights, and works whether you are behind the wheel of a convertible or a family SUV.
Start at the Folk Art Center (Milepost 382)
The Folk Art Center off US-70 is the easiest Parkway entrance from downtown Asheville and a good spot to get oriented before you climb. From here, head south toward Mount Pisgah for the drive most people picture when they think of the Parkway.
Craggy Gardens (Milepost 364)
If you have time to go north first, Craggy Gardens is worth the detour. Rhododendron blooms peak in June, but the overlooks are worth stopping for any time of year, with some of the widest mountain views on this stretch of the Parkway.
Mount Pisgah (Milepost 408.6)
Heading south from the Folk Art Center, Mount Pisgah is the anchor stop. There is an inn, a campground, and a moderate hike to the summit if you want to get out and stretch. The pull-offs along the way here are where a convertible or a car with real visibility earns its keep.
Graveyard Fields (Milepost 418)
A few more miles south, Graveyard Fields is one of the most photographed stops on this section of the Parkway, with waterfalls an easy walk from the parking area.
Devil's Courthouse (Milepost 422.4)
About 26 miles from the Asheville exit at NC-191, Devil's Courthouse has a short, steep paved trail to an overlook with views into three states on a clear day. It is the natural turnaround point for a half-day drive.
Which car to take
The Parkway's speed limit tops out at 45 mph, so this is not about horsepower. It is about visibility, comfort on curves, and not worrying about the vehicle at the pull-offs. Our Porsche 911 Convertible or BMW M4 Competition xDrive Convertible both work well for the drive itself, and both come with generous included mileage, more than enough for this loop and a stop in town after. If you are bringing the whole family, one of our GMC Yukons or Chevrolet Suburbans gives you the same views with room for everyone.
